Hannah: Faith in the Waiting

Women in the Scriptures — Institute Lesson, October 2025

 

In this Institute lesson, we explore the story of Hannah from 1 Samuel 1–2—a woman whose faithful prayers and covenant devotion reveal what it means to trust God through waiting, sorrow, and surrender.

 

Through thoughtful insights and modern application, this lesson examines how Hannah’s example teaches us to:

 • Exercise patience in the Lord’s timing

 • Pray with persistence and find peace through covenants

 • Build faith on relationship rather than reward

 • Act in faith and surrender with trust in God’s higher plan

 

Drawing on scriptural parallels such as Martha’s experience with the Savior, and supported by teachings from modern prophets and apostles, this discussion highlights the spiritual growth that can come through life’s waiting seasons.

 

Hannah’s story begins in sorrow but ends in song—a reminder that the same God who remembered Hannah remembers each of us.

Lesson 6: Ruth and Naomi

The story of Ruth and Naomi applies to us today – we are in precarious situations, we have experienced great losses, our lives have not turned out the way we expected…our faith is great but our hope is small. When we are tempted by bitterness, as Naomi was, or required to work extremely hard for our daily bread, as Ruth was, we need to figure out how committed we really are to the gospel and to God. God has a plan for us and a work for us to do. If we have committed to following Him, we put one foot in front of the other, make choices, and demonstrate compassion to others. Let’s see each other as God sees us - loving, joyful, and with infinite potential.

Lesson 5: Rachel and Leah

Rachel, Leah, and their handmaids are the mothers of the house of Israel, and our ancestor mothers! Learn about their challenges, blessings, and commitment to their covenants.

Lesson 4: Rebekah

Our sister, Rebekah, is a true example of generosity, compassion, and a willingness to “go and do” whatever the Lord required of her. She was obedient and prepared when encountering Abraham’s servant and accepting the wedding offer. In her example we see what it means to fully trust in the Lord and surrender ourselves to his infinitely greater plan. We are always blessed for our efforts. 

Lesson 3: Sarah

Sarah's role in fulfilling the Abrahamic covenant shows us that Nothing Is Impossible for God. We can do hard things and He will help us. God sees us as individual women with spiritual gifts and we can trust His plan, no matter what the timing or impossibility!
